I was this many years old (picture me counting on my fingers) when I found out Biz Markie’s “Just a Friend” came from the 60’s song “(You) Got What I Need” by Freddie Scott. I have listened to “Just a Friend” a countless number of times and had zero idea. Hearing “(You) Got What I Need” as I walked into my neighborhood coffee shop yesterday completely blew my mind. I have a lot of music savvy friends, so I am guessing some of you knew this, but for the rest of you consider this your ‘Today I Learned moment.’ I feel simultaneously disappointed in myself only finding out about this now, and also accomplished as if I unlocked another musical door I had no clue existed. Having listened to him this afternoon, I can say Mr. Scott has good stuff and is going into the Pickett Musical Rotation©. These are my favorite type of musical discoveries.
Anyway, I am back to blogging until life gets busy or I forget or distracted. I have a ton of excuses at my disposal, real or otherwise. It is my gift. Speaking of gifts, I am highlighting this UGK album as my gift to you all as it includes what the real ones know is my all-time favorite song* “Int’l Players Anthem (I Choose You). I have tried for years to buy the Texas shaped single released for a Record Store Day, but it sells for over $100! I do a lot of fiscally irresponsible things, but I draw the line at $100+ for one song. Even if it is my all-time favorite song and it is in the shape of the state of Texas. I finally found the album at a marginally more responsible price. Adulting bayby, I get like a C+ at it.
Stop by and say hi if you are reading or post in the comments if you have a song you did not realize came from something else. Would love to hear about it.
*This can and does change at a moment’s notice and I will never apologize for it just know if you ask me 100 times what my all-time favorite song is at least 70 of those times it will be my answer
